How do you become a good dancer

Updated: Jun 20, 2019

Seems like this is the most recurring question that I have been asked these days. Does Everyone want to know when will they become a good dancer? How long will it take? So once and for all, I’ll answer this for you.

There is no set time period to become a good dancer. And “good dancer’ is not an absolute concept. You’ll need to work really hard to even maintain it. But that does not mean there is not a set of rules you could follow to become one. They are the most basic set to rules following which you’ll definitely achieve what you want to achieve.

Believe that you are a good dancer

Believe this with all your heart. Visualize it and never doubt it. If you can visualise this with utmost honesty, you have won 70% of your battle. It sounds easy but it is not. You’ll need to repeat it every day hundreds of times to yourself. This is very important Work and applicable to anything that you do in life. Remember, the mind is your most powerful weapon.

Do it one step at a time

Always pick one step, master it and then move on. This is especially true when you are a beginner level dancer. Consider this as the foundation of your dancing skill. You have to have a strong foundation- and for that, you’ll have to practice till you can do it in your sleep.

Work on your expressions

It is equally important to work on your expressions. Without expression on your face, even if you execute a step perfectly, the onlooker will never enjoy your performance. This also means you are not enjoying your performance or that you are hesitating. So let go of all your inhibitions, and practice in front of the mirror.

Perform in front of people

Finally, don’t keep on thinking that you’ll become a good dancer and then you’ll perform in front of people. You should perform whenever you get the opportunity, only dancing in front of other people will kill your inhibition, or else you’ll always end up being a closet dancer. So don’t be shy and just dance.

Know that there is no shortcut to being good at anything. The above mentioned are all foundations, but there is no hard and fast rule about the timeline. Which means some people in learn few basic within a month and are ready to perform within one month and some will take 3 months to get there. So don’t compare your journey to anyone. Do what feels right to you and you are all set.
